Framas Set of First Day Covers 1984

Issued 1st May 1984 and 28th August 1984 16½p and 17p.

Royal Mail Postage Labels (sometimes called Framas) were issued as an experiment by the Post Office on 1st May 1984. Special machines were also installed to provide an after-hours sales service. These main offices were in Cambridge, London, Southampton, and Windsor . Initially values were available in ½p steps up to 16p. From 28th August 1984 the machines were adjusted to provide additional values of 16½p and 17p.  The machines were taken out of service on 30th April 1985. The experiment was not repeated becaues these tests were unsuccessful!                                                The design was by Martin Newton.

The machines gave postage-paid impressions in red on unwatermarked phophorised paper. There is a grey-green wavy background design. The labels were imperforate with PVAD gum.

Stanley Gibbon’s GB QEII Specialised catalogue, volume 4, part 2, section Y, refers.

There are five envelopes in total, the first four containing values from ½p to 16p. The fifth envelope contains the 16½p and 17p values. In conclusion the final envelope contains the “1st Post Paid” frama, almost certainly not catalogued.

INFORMATION SOURCES:

First of all, Royal Mail will handle your order. Therefore please see our Shop menu for postal options:  Postage                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            We only charge postage for the first item in most cases. Thus any further items purchased would not increase the final postal charges. Furthermore we do not charge you for envelopes and packaging.

Recorded Delivery or Registered Post is also available if required. Loss or damage compensation can therefore be claimed if this option is taken.

We mention Stanley Gibbons catalogue numbers where it is possible. These numbers are either from the “Concise Stamp Catalogue” or from the “Specialised Stamp Catalogue Volume 4 Part 1”. We will try to mention any other numbering that we may use if not covered by the above. Sometimes particular stamps, booklets, or cylinder blocks are not recognized anywhere. Hence, in this case, we would use our own expertise to describe and value that  item.

In conclusion, all of our stamps are unmounted mint and in an excellent condition. We will mention any variation to this statement.

Please let us know if we have made a mistake with this description.
